OBITUARY: Stephen J. O’Brien, 61

LOWELL, MA — Stephen J. O’Brien, aged 61, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday morning, March 16, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Cheryl A. (Quattrochi) O’Brien. Married 39 years on May 6, 2016. Stephen was born in Lowell on February 10, 1956, the son of James J. and Patricia (Longtin) O’Brien of Lowell.

Stephen attended and graduated from Lowell High School in 1974. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Lawrence and in Lowell as a letter carrier for 16 years. Prior to that he was employed at Textron Systems Corp. in Wilmington, MA as a printer for 10 years.

Stephen was a member of the local NACL Branch 25 Letter Carriers of Tewksbury, MA.

He was a member of the Chelmsford Elk Lodge #2310 in his early years. Then at the Lowell Elk Lodge #87 for many years.

Stephen enjoyed playing golf, especially with his brother Paul on Sundays, but most of all he enjoyed and lived for his grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Cheryl, and his parents he is survived by his two sons, Stephen Jr. and his wife Lynne A. (Sawyer) of Chelmsford, formerly of Lowell, and Shawn J. and friend Kathy M. Hart of Lowell. Three brothers, James O’Brien Jr. of Lowell, David O’Brien and his wife Kendra of Dracut and Paul O’Brien and his wife Sheila of Dracut. Two granddaughters, Rylee A. and Meagan G. O’Brien, also a father and mother-in-law Joseph and Maureen Quattrochi of Lowell. A sister-in-law Gail Bonin and husband Robert of Lowell. A dear friend Susan Greenwood O’Brien of Dracut, several nieces and nephews and the brother-in-law of the late Cathy Stowell, who passed away on May 31, 2015.

Family and friends may call at the FAY McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 105 Moore St., Lowell, on MONDAY from 4 until 8 p.m. Mr. O’Brien’s funeral will begin on Tuesday MORNING at 8:45 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by his funeral mass at 10:00 at St. Margaret’s Church at 374 Stevens Street, Lowell. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Tewksbury.

As an expression of sympathy, Stephen’s family has asked that donations be made or flowers in his memory. Donations may be made to the Lowell General Main Campus, Attention PHILANTHROPY, 295 Varnum Ave., Lowell, MA. 01854.
