QUESTION: Why are you running for School Committee? Why do you feel you’re qualified for the position?
ANSWER: I am dedicated to strengthening education for all students. I have devoted my entire career to teaching and learning, and ensuring that all of our children are receiving an exemplary education. I taught second and third grade in Chelsea for ten years in an inclusive classroom, and now serve on the faculty at Boston University’s School of Education, where I prepare future elementary teachers. I supervise and coach teachers in all subject areas, but literacy is my primary focus. As a licensed literacy specialist and coach, I teach literacy courses and provide professional development to school districts in literacy curriculum and instruction. I also tutor struggling readers in K-12 and work closely with parents as we work to meet the needs of their child. Additionally, I am currently completing my doctorate in literacy and language education, where I research the importance of family involvement in schools.
I have lived in Wilmington since 2005. My two children, Hannah (grade 5) and Theo (grade 2), are currently enrolled in our school district. The Wilmington Public Schools is a strong system and I want to ensure that we continue to build on that success. I am dedicated to strengthening education for all students and I am deeply invested in our community. While my educational expertise will guide me as a school committee member, my ultimate goal is to be a voice for parents and caregivers in the important educational decisions our community must make. I will be available to all community members through email, phone and in-person meetings as I work to learn about the experiences and needs of all of our Wilmington children. I want to guarantee that all of our classrooms have exemplary teaching, supportive learning environments and most importantly, joyful and rigorous learning for our children. I hope to represent you as the School Committee addresses the town’s educational goals and policies, the school budget and school improvement plans. Together, we will continue to prepare our children for college and careers in the 21st century. Please consider me for one of your school committee votes on April 22, 2017. I would appreciate your vote and would be honored to serve on the Wilmington School Committee as your representative.
