WILMINGTON, MA — On Friday, March 10, 2017, the 5th Grade Advanced Strings and Band students at the West Intermediate School performed a concert for the entire school in celebration of Music In Our Schools Month (MISOM).
Under the direction of Ms. Jennifer Perkins, the string ensemble performed a Canon based on scales, the traditional American folk song “Long, Long Ago” and the classic favorite “Can-Can” by Offenbach. Cellist Hannah Bryson performed a “Bach Minuet,” while violist Priscilla Vo and violinist Molly MacDonald also performed solos.
The 5th grade advanced band performed a piece entitled “Penguin Promenade,” which featured unique percussion instruments and proved to be seasonally appropriate as snow fell outside. Band students also performed solos which included Patriotic songs such as “America” by Juliana Angiuoni and Alicia Gardner on flute and pop songs like “Shut up and Dance” by trumpeter Eric Packer.
The Strings and Band students delighted their teachers and classmates with their performances!
MIOSM began as a single statewide (NY) celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that schools is where all children should have access to music. Of course, we are tremendously fortunate in Wilmington to enjoy amazing support for music education, both from our school leadership and our community.
