WILMINGTON, MA — On Sunday March 12, the Wilmington Mite 4 team (5-11-1) won the Valley League Championship with a 9-3 victory over Assabet Valley . The kids all played exceptionally well with solid individual efforts and impressive teamwork.
The team entered the tournament seeded in 5th place, having to win a qualifying game against Acton-Boxboro (7-10-1) in order to enter the Semi-Final Round. The offense was deadly in that game, and they won 12-0.
The following week, Wilmington faced off against #1 Seed North Reading (10-4-4). Once again, the team played exceptionally well, and Nolan Harrison posted his second straight shutout with a 9-0 victory.
In the Championship Round, Wilmington’s opponent was Assabet Valley (7-10-1). Wilmington scored first, and was leading 3-1 after the first period. Undaunted by facing such steep opposition, the kids opened up the play with several well timed passes and capitalized on breakaway goals from Kyle Spencer, Aidan Largenton, and Richie Cooke. Impressive defense was displayed by Max Bagtaz, Tommy MacGilvray, and Jake Collins and well as exceptional, aggressive two-way hockey by Emma Allard, Tyler Hally, Dylan Mainini and Dante Capozzi.
Following this hard-fought contest, the players shook hands and each team was awarded either their Champion or Finalist trophies. As a demonstration of Wilmington’s sportsmanship and respect for Assabet Valley’s efforts, after each player received their Championship trophy, they individually shook the hands of each player and coach again before returning to their group.
