CAMBRIDGE, MA — Robert G. Scully 91, of Cambridge and Belmont passed away on February 20, 2017 after several years of his courageous struggle with Myasthenia Gravis. Son of the late Francis P. & Mary (McGowan) Scully. Beloved husband of 58 years to Rosmarie (Hopler) Scully. Loving father of Andrea & her husband Bill Keogh, Katrina & her husband John Ohl, Ian & his wife Micaela Morales Scully, Joia & her husband Seth Kirby. Devoted grandfather of Isabel & Corinne Keogh, Kristina & Liana Ohl, Andres Scully, Aidan, Myles & Alexander Kirby. Brother of Abigail Norton of Somerset, England and the late Frank & Peter Scully. Brother in law of Anne Scully of Marblehead. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many family members in the U.S., U.K. & Austria.
Robert grew up in Cambridge where he attended the Russell School and Cambridge Academy. He spent his high school years at Tabor Academy, Marion, MA (’44). Bob enlisted in the United States Navy aged 17 serving in the Signal Corps in the Pacific before his discharge in 1946. After graduating from Harvard University (’51) he took a position with American Express and worked in New York, England and San Francisco. In 1956, he joined the family business and became President of Scully Signal Company, a manufacturing company for oil delivery and overfill prevention systems, in 1964. Over the next fifty years he grew the company, achieving recognition and global reach for the business. He was the recipient of numerous lifetime achievement awards.
An accomplished sailor, skier, tennis player and amateur Historian, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. He travelled the world for business and pleasure and made friends wherever he went. More than anything he enjoyed socializing and a good party. His Sugar Hill, NH vacation home is where he relaxed. Bob lived his full life with grace, generosity and gusto.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Paul’s Church (Corner of Bow & Arrow Streets) Harvard Sq. Cambridge on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 10 AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory could be made to the Pleon Yacht Club, 42 Foster Street, Marblehead, MA 01945; New England Ski Museum, 135 Tramway Drive, Franconia, NH 03580 or the St. Paul’s Choir School, 29 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.
