Wilmington DPW Receives Award; Also Praised For Superior Plowing

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Department of Public Works has received the MIIA (Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association) 2016 Individual Department of Excellence Award.  The Town accepted the award at the Massachusetts Municipal Association Annual Meeting last month.

“MIIA has recognized the Wilmington DPW for its attention to safety… going above and beyond on efforts to control risk and insurance loss, which translates to dollars saved and injuries prevent,” explained Town Manager Jeff Hull.  “The DPW experienced a 0% loss ratio in FY16.  Zero loss.  It doesn’t get better than that.”

The DPW worked closely with the town’s insurance carrier to “discuss new and innovative ways to reduce risk, apply for eligible grants, analyze loss data, and provide a dynamic safety culture which encouraged employee input.”  The department’s monthly safety training program, safety tailgates, and GIS-based asset and liability tracking were specifically praised by the MIIA.

Public Works Director Michael Woods and and Operations Manager Jamie Magaldi, Chair of the Town’s Safety Committee, were on hand at Monday night’s Board of Selectmen Meeting to receive additional recognition.

“Thank you so much for what you do.  Your increased focus on safety translated to a cost savings for Wilmington taxpayers,” noted Selectman Mike Champoux, who also complimented the DPW on its plowing and sanding of roads during the recent snowstorms, referencing a positive thread from the Wilmington Community Board Facebook page.

“The Town of Wilmington does a far better job [with plowing] that other nearby towns, such as Burlington, Bedford, Billerica and Tewksbury,” agreed Selectman Mike McCoy, who praised both DPW management and the “workers on the frontline who deserve a lot of credit.”

“Congratulations,” added Selectman Greg Bendel to Woods and Magaldi.  “Thank you for everything you do for our town.  It’s because of your team that we can get around safely.”

“I don’t think I can encompass the awesome responsbility you both have to see that Wilmington’s infrastructure remains strong and up-to-date,” said Selectwoman Chair Judy O’Connell.  “You work, your time away from your families, doesn’t go unnoticed. We’re so very, very appreciative. You’re one of the best departments we have in town.”

Town Manager Jeff Hull congratulated DPW employees at a Town Hall event last week.
