NO CONTROVERSY THIS YEAR: Board of Appeals Approves Fourth of July Committee’s Carnival Request

WILMINGTON, MA — In a vote that has flown under the radar in the local press, the Wilmington Board of Appeals recently approved the request of the Wilmington Fourth of July Committee to hold a carnival in the Swain School parking lot as part of the annual Fun on the Fourth festivities.

At its January 17th meeting, the Board of Appeals unanimously granted the special carnival permit on a motion made by member Daniel Veerman.

The application called for a layout similar to last year’s carnival, with the same amount of rides (12-14) and booths (12-14).

The carnival’s hours of operation are nearly identical to last year’s, with just a 2-hour increase on Sunday night:

  • Thursday, June 29, 5pm-9pm
  • Friday, June 30, 5pm-9pm
  • Saturday, July 1, noon-10pm (Family Day)
  • Sunday, July 2, 1pm-10pm (Spectacular Fireworks)

(If the fireworks happen to get rained out on Sunday, July 2, they would be held on Monday, July 3, and the carnival would run that night, from 5pm to 10pm.)

The Wilmington Fourth of July Committee is back in charge of organizing the carnival, including selecting and working with a carnival vendor.  The town had taken over those responsibilities last year.  (It’s a long story.)

“The Committee members are delighted that it appears we will be able to present the Fun on the Fourth Celebration for a 37th year,” Fourth of July Committee Chair Scott Garrant tells Wilmington Apple.
