WILMINGTON, MA — Martin G. Kuchler, fondly known as “Marty” to his family and friends, age 80, of Wilmington, died peacefully on December 25, 2016.
Marty was born in Stuttgart, Germany on September 19, 1936; he was the dear son of the late Albert and Hilda Kuchler. Marty was raised and educated in Germany and was trained as a Master Baker. He was also quite an athlete and played semi-pro soccer in Germany for several years.
In 1957 at the age of 21 he came to the United States to visit his Uncle who owned Lyndell’s Bakery in Somerville, MA; with his master baking skills he went to work helping his Uncle with the bakery. Marty’s original plan was to help his family with the bakery temporarily and then return to his hometown in Germany; but plans changed when he met Mary Theresa Lyons a beautiful young lady who worked at the bakery as well. Marty was smitten and Mary became the love of his life and his best friend for over 54 years.
Marty and Mary married on July 7, 1962; following the wedding they took a six week honeymoon to Germany and its surrounding countries. Marty and Mary moved to Wilmington in 1966 where they raised their family and made their home for more than 50 years.
Marty continued to work hard for his family; he worked at the bakery until 1967 and then took a position as a truck driver for the Public Buildings Department in the Town of Wilmington. Marty liked his new job and his co-workers; he was hard working, conscientious and was a great employee for the town for over 30 years.
For many years, Marty was an active member of the Tewksbury/Wilmington Lodge of Elks #2070, the Wilmington Knights of Columbus Fr. Croke Council #4982 and a 4th Degree member of Bishop Delaney Assembly #397. Throughout the years he volunteered countless hours with each organization; Marty gave of his time and talents for the many fundraisers that each organization ran and was always willing to help out in any way.
In his spare time, Marty liked to follow sports, especially football and soccer; he also enjoyed watching classic tv shows such as Barney Miller and Archie Bunker where he acquired quite a sense of humor. Marty liked to relax on his deck listening to the waterfall and enjoying his koi pond.
Throughout the years, Marty and Mary became quite the world travelers; they visited every State in the United States and every country around the world, whether by plane, cruise ship, or car. Marty and Mary loved seeing new places and meeting new people, they were very adventurous and were not afraid to try anything; they even took a hot air balloon across the Sahara desert while on a trip to Egypt.
Marty will be fondly remembered as a wonderful guy; he had a great sense of humor and was kind to everyone. Marty loved his family unconditionally and cherished his role as “Papa” to his grandchildren. Marty will be forever in the hearts of those he loved.
Marty was the beloved husband of 54 years to Mary T. (Lyons) Kuchler, devoted father of MaryBeth Smith & husband Scott, Kristine Johnston and Martin J. Kuchler all of Wilmington and Cheryl Corson of Tewksbury. Loving “Papa” of Jaclyn, Derek, & Shauna Smith, Danielle Williams & husband Nicholas, Shane & Evan Corson and Brittany Kuchler. Cherished son of the late Albert and Hilda Kuchler, dear brother of Dieter Kuchler of Germany He is also survived by his special cousin Martin Kuchler of Germany.
Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Saturday, December 31st at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St. (Rte. 38) Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, December 30th from 3:00-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Martin’s memory may be made to the Tewksbury/Wilmington Emblem Club #381 Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 412, Tewksbury, MA 01876.
