WILMINGTON, MA — Last season, the WHS Varsity Girls Track Team captured its very first Middlesex League Championship with an undefeated year.
This season, the team picked up where it left off, with a 47-39 victory over Melrose, at the Reggie Lewis Field House, on Wednesday afternoon.
The meet went down to the wire, with the final event — 4×400 relay — sealing the victory for Wilmington High. The 4×4 relay team — Alyssa Bernazani, Anna De La Cruz, Taeya Peroni and Lexi Luna — ran a very strong relay, qualifying for the state meet with a time of 4:24.46.
“I am happy for these four girls as they were able to push hard and stay focus given the task at hand and the circumstance of the race,” said Head Coach Brian Schell.
According to Schell, Emma Garrity in the Mile (5:53) and Alyssa Bernazani in the 1000m (3:21) also looked very strong in their respective first place finishes.
“Going into the meet, we knew Melrose was tough and a well-rounded team,” added Schell. “From the start of the meet, we had plenty of strong performances, including some personal records… The team collectively fought tough, worked hard and pulled off a tough win.”
