WILMINGTON, MA — Here are FIVE things that happened at Wednesday night’s Wilmington School Committee Meeting.
#1) The Wilmington School Committee unanimously approved a $2,000 donation from IBM to the Wilmington High School’s DECA Club. The request was facilitated by Kathleen Sullivan, a strategy executive at IBM who has a daughter that attends WHS and is actively involved in the school’s DECA Club.
#2) The Wilmington School Committee unanimously approved a $1,000 donation from C.A.S.IT (Centro Attivia Scholastiche Italiane), an organization that supports Italian teachers, students and classrooms. WHS Junior Zoe Marzi was recognized by C.A.S.IT at the Italian National Heritage Month kickoff on September 30 at the State House. Marzi’s $1,000 scholarship from C.A.S.IT will be used the World Languages Department to benefit the WHS Italian program.
#3) Wilmington Interim Superintendent Joanne Benton provided committee members with a summary of the Global Child Spanish classes taught after schools to Wilmington elementary students. 32 students participated in the fall semester — 6 at Boutwell, 9 at Shawsheen, 8 at Wildwood, and 9 at Woburn Street. Global Child Director Diana Hibner praised the district for its support.
#4) School Committee member Peggy Kane, liaison to the Wilmington Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC), encouraged parents to take more advantage of the group’s offerings. The SEPAC, for example, is continuing its parent/caregiver support group, with informal meetings in the back conference room at Panera Bread. Upcoming dates and times include: Tuesday, December 15, 8:30am; Wednesday, January 11, 6pm; and Wednesday, January 25, 8:30am. Kane thanked SEPAC members Jo Newhouse and Christine Nally in attendance. The Wilmington SEPAC is also now on Facebook to share news and information. Like their page HERE.
