Wilmington Youth Hockey Pays Tribute To Malone & Silveira

WILMINGTON, MA — The 2016 Midget coaches of Wilmington Youth Hockey would like to congratulate Bret Malone and David Silveira on playing their last youth hockey games and wish them the very best in the future. Wilmington Youth Hockey is proud to have been part of these boys’s childhood. We were able to watch them in the days when their parents dressed them and tied their skates, and now they leave us driving themselves to games. We have truly watched them grow up, and hope Wilmington Youth Hockey will always be part of their memories.

David Silveira is a highly skilled, undersized player with good habits and gritty play. David capped off his WYH career competing in the finals of the State Tournament against Charlestown. His midget team rolled into the final match, undefeated with David contributing his great play. In the semi-final game against Tri-Town, David put the team on his back with a goal and an assist. The team was down 1-0 and being stymied by a hot goalie when David finally broke through with a goal to end the second period and followed up his heroics 20 seconds later by setting up the game winning goal.

David will never forget some of his great days in youth hockey. As a 10 year old he and Ryan St. Jean represented Wilmington in Mini One-on-One at the Boston Garden, making it to the semi-finals and seen on TV during a Bruin’s game. In 2008, Dave had a blast winning the Lowell Devil’s tournament as a young “mite” player. In 2011, he was holding his stick up high after winning a fun Turkey Day Tournament in NH.

Bret Malone capped off his WYH career with a goal in his final game. Prototypical of his play, Bret dumped the puck into the corner, battled the defenseman behind the net, retook possession of the puck, came around the net and slammed it past the goalie. A short time later, he frustrated his opponent with tenacity until the opponent committed a penalty. Those types of efforts are never seen in the scorebook, but his teammates know. A new line jumps onto the ice with a power play to take advantage of; as Bret rests on bench knowing his hard work helped the team. Bret is a true team player.

As a youngster, Bret grew a love of the game by the friends he made along the way. As a “squirt”, he helped his team to the Duel State Championship, then as a “pee wee” he repeated the title holder in the Valley League.

Both David Silveira and Bret Malone have represented Wilmington well and wore the Wildcat on their sweater with pride. They are both hard working and skilled players, but most of all they are both good people. They came to Wilmington Youth Hockey as small children, played some hockey, grew up before our eyes and leave as true gentleman with great futures and lots of memories to last a lifetime.
