BILLERICA, MA — The Shawsheen Valley Technical High School community gathered on Thanksgiving morning with much to celebrate. In addition to the annual Turkey Day football game against rivals from Greater Lowell Tech, staff, students, alumni and friends gathered with the School Committee to honor Charles Lyons, the former Superintendent, at a dedication ceremony for the new Shawsheen sports complex — the Charles H. Lyons Sports Complex.
Shawsheen School Committee Chair Robert Peterson spoke on behalf of the entire Shawsheen family at a dedication that included the unveiling a magnificent new plaque honoring Mr. Lyons. The dedication ceremony took place at the entrance to the new sport complex on the site of the new football field and stadium.
Mr. Lyons, the iconic Superintendent and ardent champion of vocational and technical education statewide, served for twenty-eight years as Superintendent and leader of the Shawsheen community. His successor, Mr. Timothy Broadrick, acknowledges the challenge of succeeding Mr. Lyons. “Charlie was an extraordinary leader who dedicated himself to the success of every student who attended Shawsheen Tech. He expected excellence while leading with a big heart and much joy for his work. The faculty and staff here work tirelessly to help make Shawsheen Tech one of the finest technical high schools in the state in part because of the sense of community and family that Charlie created during his long tenure as Superintendent. This dedication ceremony is a fitting tribute to his legacy and it makes this Thanksgiving just that much more special for all of us”.
