WILMINGTON, MA — Supporting and thanking the men and women who serve the country is something that is expected on Veterans Day. Being homeless or living in crisis is not something people picture when thinking of these veterans, but it is all too common.
According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, between 131,000 and 200,000 veterans are homeless on any given night, and over the course of a year approximately twice that experience homelessness. Even though only 8 percent of the general population can claim veteran status, one-fifth of the homeless population are veterans.
To thank veterans and show appreciation to their sacrifices to the country this Veterans Day, the Wilmington location of Two Men and a Truck recently presented its Movers for Military collection program to support veterans and their families living in crisis this fall by providing helpful donations.
This year, the Wilmington moving company worked with local organizations and businesses such as Bausch & Lomb, Pearle Vision, Subway, Analog Devices, Wilmington True Value, Sweet Pizza, Reading Cooperative Banks, and the first, second and third grades at the Woburn Street School to collect essential and comfort items. More than 2,600 donations were collected and delivered to The New England Center and Home for Veterans, in Boston.
“On behalf of NECHV, we would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Two Men and a Truck, and to all of the organizations, individuals and families who participated in the Movers for Military program. The support is essential in ensuring that all veterans receive exceptional support from their fellow countrymen when they are returning home or are in need of services to bring them back on track towards dignified, independent living,” said CJ Beck, NECHV philanthropic officer for community engagement. “We are honored to have partners such as yourselves, and thank you for your generosity.”
This fall marked the fifth anniversary of the Movers for Military program. In 2015, franchises across the country collected nearly 20,000 donations for veterans in need. For more information on the program, visit HERE.
