VIDEO: Reading Municipal Light Department Releases Maintenance PSA For Customers

WILMINGTON, MA — Reading Municipal Light Department has created a public service announcement video for customers regarding their electric service. The video, with the assistance of a licensed electrician and one of RMLD’s technicians, will identify the line of ownership demarcation between the customer and the RMLD, and offers recommendations to homeowners for periodic maintenance inspections of their electrical service.

A typical electrical service runs from the pole to the house, through a meter and down into the electrical panel. The RMLD has a cyclic maintenance program on utility owned equipment and the homeowner should also have a maintenance plan for their owned equipment. Once every five years is the recommended cyclic maintenance for the homeowner’s equipment where they secure a licensed electrician to inspect and evaluate their electrical service. The electrician should work to ensure that all connections are tight, that proper grounding is installed, that no corrosion exists, etc., all of which can help to mitigate potential expensive emergency repairs, damage to appliances and unnecessary disruptions in service.

“Often times a lack of homeowner maintenance of their electrical system will result in a disappointing call to the RMLD when the homeowner is told that, for example, the corroded meter box that is causing their electricity issue is actually owned by you, the homeowner,” said General Manager Coleen O’Brien. “We at RMLD want to help our customers avoid costs by providing this useful informational video on the proactive maintenance steps that can be taken to help ensure that the homeowner’s service remains safe and reliable.”

This video is part of RMLD’s new Communications Roadmap, in part created to improve customer communications.
