10 Things You Need To Know In Wilmington Today (October 30, 2016)

WILMINGTON, MA — Here are 10 things you need to know in Wilmington for Sunday, October 30, 2016.

#1) According to the National Weather Service, Wilmington has a slight chance of showers between 3pm and 5pm, then a chance of rain after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. Northwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

#2) The Wilmington Recreation Department is sponsoring the 49th Annual Horribles Parade TODAY.  A fire engine will lead the parade down Church Street to the High School Cafeteria where treats will await all costumed children.  The parade will leave the Public Safety Building at 4:30pm. In case of inclement weather, participants should go directly to the Wilmington High School Cafeteria.

#3) Boo Bakes for Breast Cancer, a family-friendly Halloween bake sale, will be held at the Friendship Lodge (32 Church Street) from 1pm to 4pm. This fundraiser will benefit breast cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

#4) Wilmington’s David Newhouse and Bill Spencer will be holding their popular Haunted House on Sunday, October 30 and Monday, October 31, from 6pm to 8:30pm, at 3 West Jamaica Avenue. (West Jamaica Avenue is off of Faulkner Avenue, which is off of Glen Road.)  The house promises frights and tricks, with ghosts, witches, goblins and creates of the night! There will be additional entertainment for scaredy cats, including music and a light show. The event is FREE, but donations are accepted and greatly appreciated. #5) The Wilmington High School Marching Band will be performing in the Woburn Lions Club’s 62nd Annual Halloween Parade at 1pm. The event draws more than 80,000 per year and features over 25 bands and 90 floats from local groups and organizations. Learn more about the parade and its route HERE.

#6) The Wilmington United Methodist Church is hosting a pumpkin patch on its front lawn from Sunday, October 16 to Monday, October 31, between 11am and 7pm. Proceeds from this new fundraiser will benefit the church’s 2017 youth mission projects. Story times will be held in the patch daily at 4pm. Preschools and daycares are encouraged to register for story times by calling the church at 978-658-4519. S’more Dance Parties will be held on Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm. Come for a snack at the fire pit and dance into the evening with your friends.

#7) The Wilmington Town Museum and the Wilmington Minuteman Company are holding a Harvest Festival from 1pm to 4pm at the Harnden Tavern (430 Salem Street). Experience old-fashioned farm life with open-pit cooking and other food skills, candle-making, games of the past and more.  Tour Wilmington’s 18th century house museum, currently featuring the special exhibit — “101 Years of Wilmington High School.”  Enjoy some apple crisp and other seasonal goodies.  Take your chance on some auction items.

#8) The Aleppo Shriners HONS (Helping Our Nobles Serve) Ladies are hosting their annual Holiday Fair from 10am to 3pm in the Fez Room at the Shriners Auditorium (99 Fordham Road). The event features trick-or-treating for kids, photos with santa, silent auctions, raffles, jewelry, holiday table, bake sale, knit goods, entertainment, and more.  A chicken dinner will be held from noon to 2pm. Admission and parking is FREE.

#9) Austin Preparatory School in Reading is hosting its annual Open House for prospective students in grades 6 through 12 from 11am to 2pm. Learn more HERE.

#10) The Middlesex Canal Association will hold its annual Fall Talk at 1 pm at the Museum (71 Faulkner Street, Billerica).  Bill Gerber will describe the “Landings” that were part of the canal and river interstate waterway between Boston Harbor and Concord NH before the steam locomotive transformed transportation.
