WILMINGTON, MA — The North Intermediate School welcomed fourth grade families to the school with a “Love of Literacy Night.”
In mid-October, staff members engaged with students and parents provided some strategies to families as they support their children as readers.
The event was designed with several interactive stations as well as the Scholastic Book Fair sponsored by the Northside PAC.
Students received a bookmark at each station that they visited and were able to leave with a paperback book of their choosing when they select a “Just Right Book!”
Created and organized by the North’s Reading Specialists, Michele Gwozdz and Nikki Sutton, interactive centers included: Context Clues; Vocabulary Matching; Reading Fluency; Comprehension Station; Online Scavenger Hunt for book resources; and the Northside PAC Scholastic Book Fair.
Staff members supporting centers were Sheila Burke, Diane Sica and Jessica Weaver.
Also on hand for the evening were our school librarian, Heather Peachey, the children’s librarian at the Wilmington Memorial Library, Barbara Raab, and Traci Jansen, the K-5 Technology Integration Specialist.
PAC volunteers, as well as middle school and high school students earning community service hours allowed the evening to be a complete success. Through the generosity of the Northside PAC, all proceeds from their Scholastic Book Fair will be used to supplement the classroom libraries for both grade levels.
