BILLERICA, MA — Shawsheen Valley Technical High School welcomed three teachers and one paraprofessional to its educational team this school year. These individuals bring an exciting combination of skills and experience and a strong dedication to the mission of this top ranked technical and vocational high school.
Timothy Finn, Science and Biology
Born and raised in Wilmington, Mass., Timothy Finn will teach Biology and Science at Shawsheen Tech. Finn graduated from Westfield State College with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and from Fitchburg State University with a Master of Education in Special Education. He most recently taught in middle school in the Andover Public Schools system. Finn has also taught at an alternative high school and saw the difference vocational learning made in his students’ lives. “Hands-on learning did wonders for those kids – it boosted their morale and confidence,” he said. Finn enjoys hiking, camping and working out and is training for an annual triathlon when not spending time with his wife and two children.
Alexandra Hurtubise, History
Alexandra Hurtubise is no stranger to Shawsheen Tech. In 2014 she joined the school as an English aide, assisting in the classrooms as she works toward her Master in Education in High School History at Merrimack College. She is the new History teacher at Shawsheen Tech. Hurtubise graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, with a bachelor’s degree in America Studies. A resident of Milford, N.H, Hurtubise is passionate about history. “I’m a bit of a history nerd,” she said. “I’ve always been fascinated by the past. We live in an area so rich in history.” Hurtubise is engaged to be married and has a puppy named Finley, who is being trained to be a service dog.
James Muthig, Pre-engineering/Project Lead the Way
As a master teacher for Project Lead the Way, James Muthig joins Shawsheen Tech uniquely qualified to instruct students in this new interdisciplinary pre-engineering program. Muthig graduated from the State University of New York Maritime College with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and from the University of Southern Maine with a Master in Education. He most recently taught math and engineering at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, N.H. He has been helping other teachers become certified in Project Lead the Way since January 2015. “Everything has to come together for a widget to be made,” Muthig said. “The drafter has to understand the electrical system and so on. Working together on projects provides an understanding of how the whole works and we will do that here. I’m very excited to be here in hopes of bringing a little bit more of an idea of what engineering is all about.” Muthig, who is married with two children, enjoys training for triathlons in his spare time.
