WILMINGTON, MA — Kindness is a language that is heard by the deaf and seen by the blind. And it is definitely spoken by six local children.
On Sunday afternoon before a full house, the Mary Jo Brown Foundation, a 501 c NPO, honored six finalists in the 2016 Kindness Campaign. Conducted each year, the program rewards children who have shown great generosity of spirit, compassion for others, and voluntary public service.
Kylie Plowman of Wilmington, a 4th grade student at the West Intermediate School was recognized for her program “Kylie’s Gift of Giving.” Deborah Weiner, Director of Religious Education at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Reading submitted the nomination, noting that Kylie calls us all to our best selves.
Concerned for children who are sick or who might not receive gifts, Kylie penned a letter to Santa asking for $600. She and her mom, Melissa, started a crowdfunding page which quickly grew to several thousand dollars. Half went to Boston Children’s Hospital where Tara Tonello tells us that spending time with the Plowman family was one of her favorite days at work and that she was impressed by Kylie’s poise. The other half of Kylie’s fundraising went to the Wilmington Fire Department for the Toys for Wilmington Children program.
Before the holiday season was over, Kylie was already thinking of what she would do for others during the 2016 holiday season. We have no doubt that we will be reading more about Kylie in the future and that she will probably be enlisting the help of her younger sister, Natalie, for whom she serves an incredible role model.
Kylie received a framed certificate from the Foundation, a Visa gift card, and a copy of a personalized book “Kylie Can Change the World”. Perhaps we should have had the publisher re-work the title to “Kylie HAS Changed the World”. Congratulations to Kylie and her loving family. May all your dreams come true.
