WILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s Wilmington Board of Selectmen Meeting, Town Manager Jeff Hull announced that the Wilmington Memorial Library has been selected to host a Mass. Memories Road Show on Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 10am to 2pm, in the Wilmington High School Cafeteria.
“The Mass. Memories Road Show at UMass Boston is an event-based public history project that digitizes family photos and memories hared by the people of Massachusetts,” explains Library Director Tina Stewart. “The goal of the Mass. Memories Road Show is to reflect as realistic a picture as possible of the community and to create a self-portrait of Wilmington based on photographs in residents’ scrapbooks and photo albums.”
Photos do not have to have a historic tie to Wilmington, according to Stewart, but rather are meant to reflect life in Wilmington past and present. A wedding photo, pictures of relatives gathering for a special event, or a photo of a child’s first day of school are all examples Stewart cites.
“Contributors may select up to three family photos to be scanned that are important to them,” says Stewart. “They will also have the opportunity to share ‘the story behind the photos’ on video, have their own keepsake photo taken, and receive advice from professional archivists and historians on dating and caring for their family photos.”
The archive of past Road Show events in other Massachusetts communities can be found HERE.
The application process was spearheaded by Assistant Library Director Charlotte Woods, with support letters from many local organizations, including the Wilmington Senior Center, Wilmington Town Museum, WCTV, Wilmington Community Fund, Wilmington Fourth of July Committee, Wilmington Public Schools, Wilmington Veterans Office, and Wilmington Chamber of Commerce.
