WHS VOLLEYBALL: Wildcats Have Best Week Of The Season (So Far)

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Volleyball team (4-7) just had its best week of the season — defeating Stoneham and Medford, while dropping a close matchup to powerhouse Burlington.

Below is a brief summary of last week’s action:

Tuesday, September 27
Wilmington  High School @ Stoneham High School

Wilmington defeated Stoneham, 3-1, in four sets:

  • Set 1: Wilmington – 25, Stoneham – 19
  • Set 2: Wilmington – 23, Stoneham – 25
  • Set 3: Wilmington – 27, Stoneham – 25
  • Set 4: Wilmington – 25, Stoneham – 19
Junior Lauren Field and Senior Christina Woods led the team with aggressive serves. Seniors Heather Pozzi and Sabrina Doyle contributed great offense from the outside.
“Wilmington did themselves proud, coming from behind in both of the last two sets to earn a well deserved victory,” said Coach Bruce Stainwald.

Thursday, September 29

Wilmington High School vs. Medford High School

Wilmington defeated Medford, 3-1, in four seats:

  • Set 1: Wilmington – 25, Medford – 20
  • Set 2: Wilmington – 25, Medford – 21
  • Set 3: Wilmington -22, Medford – 25
  • Set 4: Wilmington – 25, Medford – 20

“Wilmington came out strong right from the start and took control of the outcome of both of the first two sets. Medford was able to come back to take the third set, but Wilmington was not going to let this opportunity slip away,” said Stainwald.

Seniors Abby Shedd and Christina Woods, plus juniors Toni Kieran and Lauren Woods, all served more than 90% of their serves in and combined for 9 aces. Senior Sabrina Doyle had 14 kills from the outside and junior Morgan Bresnahan had 10 kills out of the middle.

Wilmington fell to Medford earlier in the season in three straight sets. The win shows just how far the team has come.

Friday, September 30
Wilmington High School vs. Burlington High School

Wilmington, riding a 2-game winning streak, lost to Burlington, riding a 7-game winning streak of their own, in three straight sets:

  • Set 1: Wilmington – 20, Burlington – 25
  • Set 2: Wilmington – 19, Burlington – 25
  • Set 3: Wilmington – 17, Burlington – 25
“Wilmington came out sluggish in both of the first two sets and staked Burlington to a decent lead before fighting their way back and tying it, only to lose the last few points.,” said Stainwald. “The girls were disappointed to lose this, but we will build on the positives and continue to improve.”
