WILMINGTON, MA — Here are highlights from the Wilmington Police Log for the week of Sunday, September 18, 2016.
Sunday, September 18:
- Robert Wumsh (26, Middleton) was placed in protective custody. Police came across his vehicle abandoned, with keys ignition and a flat tire on Burlington Avenue. (12:09am)
- An erratic operator was witness near the North Intermediate School, driving over the yellow lines. Operator got onto 93 North. State Police notified. (7:24am)
- Police notified DPW that the red light at Main Street and Grove Avenue was not working. (12:31pm)
- A minor 2-car accident took place at AL Prime gas station on Main Street. (2:09pm)
- State Police put out a Be-On-The-Lookout alert for a gray Nissan Rogue, which got off Exit 40. The driver, a Hispanic male in his 20’s, flashed a handgun to a civilian. Police locate the vehicle on Earles Row. State Police handled. (3:15pm)
- A pumpkin was smashed against the back of Town Hall. No damage to building. (5:55pm)
Monday, September 19:
- Police came across a vehicle in the Market Basket parking lot with its door open. Police checked on operator. Operator was napping in vehicle and had door open for air. (1:04am)
- Police received a report of a suspicious man on Lawrence Street, sitting on the ground wearing dark clothing and a hood, carrying a suitcase. Police checked on man. Man had gotten into a fight with his girlfriend. Police transported him back to the station to wait for a ride. (7:40am)
- The Animal Control Officer removed a deceased black and white cat from Dadant Drive. Cat was not microchipped. (8:40am)
- A resident reported a suspicious vehicle was parked at the corner of Chapman Avenue and Sheridan Road, described as a white Subaru. Caller stated two men were in the vehicle and a third man on a bicycle pulled up to the vehicle’s window and some sort of exchange took place. Police responded, but vehicle was gone on arrival. (11:02am)
- Police tracked down a white box truck from Art of the Event that was involved in a minor crash in the parking lot of Stop & Go Sub Shop. (11:14am)
- A gray 2009 Chevy Malibu was reported stolen from Broad Street, taken sometime since Sunday morning. Police put out a BOLO. Vehicle has a white Hello Kitty sticker on the rear windshield and cheetah print interior. (11:24am)
- An anonymous caller reported a Fox News truck near the high school. Caller felt it was suspicious. Police responded and was satisfied with the truck’s parking. (1:56pm)
- A caller reported a woman was slumped over in a car in the CVS parking lot. Police responded and confiscated drug paraphernalia from vehicle. (5:57pm)
- Parents reported their son missing, last seen on 1:00pm Sunday. Police entered the missing male into the NCIC. No further information. (9:17pm)
Tuesday, September 20:
- Police conducted a check of Yentile Farm. The gate was found open and tire marks were noted on the hydro seeded area in the back of the property. Police secured the gate. (12:53am)
- A Lee Street caller reported her doorbell keeps ringing, but she doesn’t see anyone in the area. Police checked area. Doorbell appears to be defective. (1:17am)
- A police cruiser was involved in a minor car accident at the intersection of Bridge Street and VFW Parkway in Lowell. A blue 2006 Honda Accord pulled out of a Dunkin Donuts parking lot and tapped the rear bumper of the cruiser. (7:23am)
- Bruno Cardia (39, Tewksbury) was issued a summons for a railroad crossing violation and leaving the scene of property damage. Cardia allegedly struck train gates on Main Street, leaving the gate lying across the roadway, and continued southbound on Main Street. Amtrac estimated the repair job at $2,000. (8:12am)
- An anonymous caller reported young children were in the large dog area of the dog park. Police advised the parties. (8:40am)
- A tree knocked down a railroad sign on Woburn Street. Police notified DPW. (11:23am)
- Animal Control Officer took an injured seagull to a vet in Tewksbury. Seagull was located outside the Department of Public Works building. (11:39am)
- A Marion Street Ext. resident reported their house was egged sometime after Saturday night. Owner just noticed it today. Owner requested extra patrols. (12:25pm)
- A caller reported finding a bag outside outside her work on Concord Street, possibly containing drugs. Caller reported a young African American woman is in the area where the bag was found, appearing to be searching for it. Police responded and brought the bag back to the station to test its contents. Detectives determined the substance was clay used in the practice of geophagia (eating earth or soil-like substances such as clay or chalk.)
- Animal Control Officer spoke to a driver who left his dog in the car, with the windows cracked, in the Savers parking lot. (1:03pm)
- A gray 2005 Honda Pilot and a gray 2003 Dodge Durango were involved in a crash on 93 North. No injuries reported. Police transported a woman and 2 minors. (2:52pm)
- Nicole M. Purcell (44, Salem) was issued a summons for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. (4:58pm)
- Police assisted the Fire Department with an oven fire on Ring Avenue. (5:14pm)
Wednesday, September 21:
- A Swain Road resident reported a larceny from his shed valued at $150. (9:20am)
- A Hillside Way caller reported vehicles were speeding, with a heavier presence of trucks, during rush hour. Caller requested an officer to check during rush hour times. (9:45am)
- Police installed 4 safety seats for residents during their weekly drop-in hours at the Public Safety Building. (10:47am)
- A Deming Way resident reported a package she left out for the postal service was taken off her porch sometime after 12:00pm. Caller reported she checked in with USPS who denies having the package. (2:33pm)
- The Reading Light Department reported they noticed a teen girl attempting to climb on top of their substation on Wildwood Street. Teen was gone by the time policed arrived. (2:45pm)
- A pedestrian was struck and killed in the Rite Aid parking lot. Rosemary J. Small (90, Wilmington) was issued a summons for negligent operation of a motor vehicle. (3:00pm) [UPDATE: As of the evening of September 27, the investigation into the crash is still open and active, according to Middlesex DA Spokesman Meghan Ryan.]
- A blue 2010 Volkswagen Routan and a gray 2011 Nissan Altima were involved in a minor crash in front of Rite Aid on Main Street. (5:24pm)
- A gray 2010 Honda Accord and a black 2014 Subaru Legacy were involved in a crash on Main Street. The sign for Oakwood Road was knocked down and a rock wall and lawn at 56 Main Street was damaged. Fire Department transported one occupant to Winchester Hospital. One vehicle towed. DPW notified to replace street sign. (8:50pm)
Thursday, September 22:
- The lights at Middlesex Avenue and Glen Road were in a flash mode. Police contacted Mass Highway. (6:07am)
- Police contacted DPW over an abandoned red “trek” bike left in the woods behind a home on Shady Lane Drive. (7:36am)
- Markell S. Berberena (29, Lynn) was issued a summons for 7 counts of larceny by check over $250 and 7 counts of uttering a false check. Berberena committed the alleged crimes at Bank of America on Main Street. (8:29am)
- Police received a report that a male teen got on a school bus for Wilmington High this morning and began yelling profanities out the window. When the bus driver confronted the boy, he exited the bus on Glen Road to walk home. The boy does not attend Wilmington High, but the Seem Collaborative in Stoneham. (9:49am)
- A Shawsheen Avenue resident requested extra patrols in the area around 3:15pm-3:20pm on school days over traffic issues caused by school buses. (5:15pm)
- A walk-in party reported a passenger from the North Wilmington train station was yelling at a conductor and throwing items at the exterior of the train. After the train pulled out, the man started walking on the tracks. Police were unable to locate the man. (11:47pm)
Friday, September 23:
- Police received report of a hit & run on 93 South, prior to Exit 41. Wilmington Police notified State Police. (6:10am)
- A caller requested extra patrols during school release at the High School. Caller says cars are pulling of the student parking lot at a high rate of speed and not paying attention to approaching cars on Adams Street. (7:51am)
- A caller reported a bus driver was having issues in the morning with vehicles not stopping for the stop sign on the bus on Floradale Avenue and Burlington Avenue. Caller would like extra patrols if possible. Safety Officer Moon was also contacted. (8:40am)
- Owner of Salon 62 on Jefferson Road reported her business was broke into overnight. A rock was thrown through her window. She wasn’t certain if items were missing. (8:45am)
- James Freeman (49, Haverhill) was arrested for breaking & entering a building in the nighttime to commit a felony and malicious destruction of property over $250. Freeman was spotted near the North Wilmington train station with a laceration to his arm. Fire Department transported him to the hospital. (10:48am)
- A Demingway Ext. resident reported items were missing from her apartment. (12:30pm)
- Police investigated a possible illegal dumping on Main Street. Situation checked OK. It appears items were pre-gathered for the town-wide clean up on Saturday. (12:40pm)
- A caller reported an individual approached him at the Wilmington Plaza trying to trade a jacket for his phone or money. Police were unable to locate. (2:38pm)
- A group of youths were playing in the parking lot in front of Olympia Sports. Police advised the youths they can’t play in front of the business. (5:22pm)
- A Lowell Street caller reported her trash is being stolen. (6:10pm)
- A Middlesex Avenue caller reported his car was broken into sometime between Wednesday and Friday night. Caller’s passenger side window was smashed with a rock. Nothing appeared to be taken. (10:14pm)
Saturday, September 24:
- Police notified DPW of a large tree down on Marion Street. (7:21am)
- A caller reported parking complaints at the Shawsheen School parking lot during soccer games. Police responded and found emergency vehicles did have sufficient access and egress. Police spoke with a couple of youth soccer board members advising them of the parking rules and regulations. (10:09am)
- Police issued 3 parking citations at or near the Shawsheen School parking lot. (10:47am)
- A caller reported approximately 10 ties were left next to fire hydrant on Adelaman Road. Police notified DPW. (2:20pm)
- Police drove an intoxicated female to her residence. (2:57pm)
- Police placed Elizabeth A. Toglia (46, Wilmington) in protective custody after MBTA police reported an intoxicated female on the platform at the Wilmington Center train station. (4:11pm)
- A Salvation Army employee reported an iPhone was stolen off the counter. An app was used to locate the phone in Somerville. Police contacted Somerville PD. (4:55pm)
- A resident reported a younger male in a green Celtics shirt had been screaming obscenities for over 2 hours on the WHS basketball court. Police were unable to locate the man. (5:52pm)
- A Nichols Street resident reported excessive speeding in the area and motorcycles being too loud at the stop sign. Resident reported extra patrols in the area. (6:37pm)
