SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: 5 Things That Happened At This Week’s Meeting

WILMINGTON, MA — Here are FIVE things that happened at this week’s Wilmington School Committee Meeting.  (Look for five more tomorrow!):

#1) Superintendent Mary DeLai announced that Wilmington School Nurse Leader Doreen Crowe was recently named the Massachusetts School Nurse Administrator of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year by the Massachusetts School Nurse Organization (MSNO).  Crowe, who was nominated by colleague Jane Ferrera, will receive the prestigious award on October 15 at the MSNO’s Fall Conference.

#2) Superintendent Mary DeLai announced that two Wilmington High School students have progressed very far along in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. WHS senior Anna De La Cruz has been named a 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended student.  De La Cruz placed in the top 1% of more than 1.6 million students who test the exam.  WHS senior Kyria Nelson was named a semi-finalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program — one of just 16,000 semi-finalists nationwide who is still in the running for one of the 750 National Merit Scholarships that will be announced this spring.

#3) Superintendent Mary DeLai announced that the Woburn Street School and North Intermediate School both achieved ‘Level 1’ accountability status on the Spring 2016 MCAS making them amongst the highest performing schools in the Commonwealth. The MCAS scores and accountability statuses were publicly released on Monday night.  Additional details about the school system’s MCAS performance will be distributed in October when the district presents its annual performance assessment and accountability reports to the Committee.

#4) Wilmington School Committee member Peggy Kane, who serves as the committee’s liaison to the district’s Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC), reported that the council recently held a successful Basic Rights Workshop.  “I can’t tell you how much of a support this group is for parents with special needs children… They have so much to offer. They’re wonderful people that organize a lot of important workshops.  It’s a very welcoming group.”  Kane would like to see more parents get involved in the SEPAC, which next meets on Thursday, October 13 at 6:30pm in the WHS Library.

#5) Wilmington School Committee members unanimously appointed member M.J. Byrnes to represent them as their delegate to the upcoming Massachusetts Association of School Committee Conference.
