SELECTMEN NEWS: Bendel ‘Disappointed’ In Superintendent’s Decision

WILMINGTON, MA — Selectman Greg Bendel took a minute at the end of Monday night’s Selectmen’s Meeting to address a hot topic in town — School Superintendent Mary DeLai’s decision to allow a Wilmington High School teacher to return to work despite pending domestic violence charges.

“I am disappointed by how the School Superintendent handled [the situation],” said Bendel. “I am disappointed that the Superintendent did not communicate with the Town Manager, the Police Chief or any other town administrators before communicating with the community about such a serious issue.”

“I am also very concerned about the message her decision sends to our children and all the residents, about how our town officials feel about domestic violence,” added Bendel.

Bendel was quick to point out that the Board of Selectmen has no jurisdiction over school personnel issues.

“I am not in a position to comment on the details of events that started this all.  Every citizen is entitled to their day in court,” clarified Bendel.  “My issue is with how things were handled by the Superintendent after the alleged events took place.

Bendel, who works as a teacher and coach at nearby Shawsheen Tech, said he felt obligated to speak out on the matter after being contacted by residents over the past two weeks.

Selectman Mike McCoy said he “totally agreed” with Bendel’s comments.

Town Manager Jeff Hull had no comment on the situation when asked by Wilmington Apple after the meeting.
