Drug forfeiture program

In some circumstances, convicted drug dealers are ordered to forfeit the proceeds of their criminal activity. These proceeds can be cash, cars, boats or other valuable property.

Massachusetts law authorizes law enforcement to expend the proceeds received by way of drug forfeiture orders. The forfeiture statute allows the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office to donate a portion of forfeiture funds to nonprofit groups who offer drug rehabilitation, drug education and other anti-drug or neighborhood crime watch programs.

Forfeiture funds are generally awarded annually, as funds are available for this purpose. Each application is reviewed by the DA office’s Forfeiture Fund Committee.
