WILMINGTON, MA — Taylor Twellman, former Major League Soccer all-star and current ESPN Lead Soccer Analyst, visited Wilmington High School to discuss concussion safety on last Wednesday, September 14 at Alumni Field.
Wilmington was just one of five Massachusetts high schools selected for a visit from Twellman during the state’s Concussion Awareness Week.
Twellman retired from professional soccer in 2010 due to complications from multiple concussions and has since founded ThinkTaylor.
ThinkTaylor, a 5o1c3 non-profit, is dedicated to changing the culture in the world of concussions. ThinkTaylor’s positive message emphasizes awareness, recognition, education and putting the health of kids first. The organization strives to create positive social change in the area of concussions and, in return a safer, healthier and smarter environment.
Twellman asked student athletes to take his “TT Pledge:”
- I pledge to be EDUCATED on the signs & symptoms of concussions
- I pledge to be HONEST with my coaches, parents, teammates and teachers
- I pledge to be SUPPORTIVE of anyone with a concussion
Students heard from Twellman; a recent high school graduate who suffered concussions playing soccer; a representative from the MIAA; and Wilmington Athletic Director Tim Alberts.
Wilmington Community Television recorded the event, and followed up with brief, 1-on-1 interviews with each speaker. Watch their coverage before:
