LETTER: Recent WHS Grad Sounds Off On Decision To Allow Altieri To Quickly Return

Dear Editor,

I graduated from WHS in 2015, and awoke this morning to read about the highly questionable decision to allow Anthony Altieri back inside the classroom following charges (and reported admittance) of domestic violence.

Frankly, I find Ms. DeLai’s handling of this case to be baffling, if not extremely worrisome for all members of the community. All citizens are due their day in court; no one can deny this fact, however disturbing as it may be.

However; this is an educator of children, one who admitted to police that he did indeed strike and assault this woman in Essex county- clearly he is at best a risk to allow back within the doors of public education.

The proper move would have been a full suspension or continuation of administrative leave until the trial and subsequent judicial decision was done with; instead, DeLai seems to value legal language and her own self image (which is tarnished) more than the safety of students within the school system, not to mention the highly concerning message being sent to students all throughout the school system.

I hope that this mistake is rectified by the school system quickly; and I also wish a speedy recovery to the reported victim in Essex county. Unfortunately, this decision strikes a blow to any confidence once held with the school administration.

Sincerely,

A Former WHS Student in College
