SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: Wildcat Sports Camps Have Best Summer Yet

WILMINGTON, MA — This summer’s sports camps offered by the Wilmington High School’s Athletic Department had the highest participation rate, revenue total and profit total since the camps began in 2009, according to a memo Director of Administration and Finance Paul Ruggiero shared with the Wilmington School Committee at its latest meeting.

The camps, held at Wilmington High, brought in $80,200 in total revenue and $36,400 in profit, an increase of $3,700 over last summer.

481 children participated in the camps, an increase of 45 students over last summer.

11 camps were offered: Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Field Hockey, Flag Football, Volleyball, Boys Lacrosse, Girls Lacrosse, “All Sports,” Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Track.

All camps ran for five days in a week for a total of 28 hours, with the exception of Track and Volleyball, which ran for four days and 24 hours.

The cost of the camps were $175 per week for each sport, with the exception of Track and Volleyball, which cost $150.  Additional camp enrollment was discounted $25 per clinic.

All funds generated by the camps are designated to the Athletic Department.

“As we look to the future, we will continue to make some modifications/betterments to the camps and we are sure they will continue to grow,” said Ruggiero.

School Committee Chair Julie Broussard praised the school district for providing a low-cost summer camp option to Wilmington families and an opportunity for kids to get to know the coaches and other players.
