WILMINGTON, MA — Here are FIVE things that happened at last night’s Wilmington School Committee Meeting:
#1) Superintendent Mary DeLai announced that the roof replacement at the Boutwell Early Childhood Center and partial roof placement at the North Interemediate School did not happen this summer, as planned, due to a bid process protest, which threw off the project’s timeline off. DeLai said the work will now get done over next summer.
#2.) Superintendent DeLai announced that the district’s Office of Information Technology headquarters moved from the basement of the West Intermediate to office space in the Wilmington High School library. DeLai notes the OIT staff will now be better positioned to support the technology-rich high school and its new 1:1 tablet program.
#3.) The School Committee is in the process of updating some of the language in its policies related to drug, alcohol and tobacco use by students. The changes, recommended by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, are in response to recent state law changes. The School Committee is also updating its policy on administering medicines to students, adding a brief section addressing Narcan.
#4.) The School Committee unanimously approved a request for an out-of-state, overnight field trip in November. Interested Wilmington High School students taking Spanish will be given the opportunity to spend 2 days in New York City, visiting the United Nations, Spanish Harlem, the Museo del Barrio and Spanish restaurants and activities.
#5) The School Committee has begun the process of updating a self-evaluation survey which will be distributed to the entire committee. Members MJ Byrnes and Manny Mulas volunteered for the task.
