WHS GIRLS TRACK: Wildcats Fall To Much Larger Reading Team In Opener

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Girls Cross Country team (0-1) opened its season with a 15-50 loss to Reading on Tuesday, September 13 at home.

“Reading had 26 girls to our 7 girls,” noted Coach Brian Schell.  “They’re a tough team and knowing that going into the meet, we used today more of a trial for a lot of the new kids to see where summer training had brought them.”

Freshman Samantha Burke was the Wildcat’s top finisher in 11th place at 23:47.

“Sam has looked good for the short time she has been here during the season,” observed Schell.  “She definitely has what it takes to be a strong runner.”

Senior Captain Anna De La Cruz (illness) and junior Lailoo Perrillo (hip injury) were battling throughout the race.  Perrillo finished in 14th place with a time of 24:40.  De La Cruz finished in 20th place with a time of 26:10.

“Once healthy, I know both of these two will step up their times and work with Sam [Burke] to push each other,” said Schell.

Sophomore Amie Russel clocked in at 26:48 (21st), freshman Heather Ritson finished at 30:24 (25th), and senior Lian Tran ran a 32:27 (26th).
