WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Boys Cross Country team (0-1) opened its season with a 21-46 loss to Reading on Tuesday, September 13 at home.
“A lot of the boys ran very well and several even set personal records,” said Coach Brian Schell. “We came into the season with only one individual under 20 minutes and, at the first meet alone, we finished with four. We also have a good amount of the team in the 20-21 minute range, so if they can work together, we can have a lot break that mark.”
Senior captain Jason Dunn was the Wildcats top runner, placing third with a time of 17:47, a personal record.
“It clearly shows how well he has trained during the off season to get this far. He looked comfortable when needed and strong throughout the race,” observed Schell.
Sophomore Kevin Elderd had the best performance of his young Wildcat career, placing 4th with a time of 18:28.
“I am very happy for Kevin as this was a personal record for him by 1.5 minutes,” said Schell. “He showed to be a true gutsy runner today. If he can learn to race a bit more tactical, big things will come of it.”
Other Wildcat times included: Jesse Valente 19:28 (11th), Greg Adamek 19:40 (13th), Brian Elderd 20:35 (15th), Thomas Goodwin 20:35 (16th), Ben Packer 20:45 (17th), Vincent De La Cruz 21:16 (18th), Jimmy Valente 21:31 (19th), Jake Danieli 21:49 (20th), Pat McCarthy 22:48 (21st), and Thomas Abbot 22:58 (22nd).
“Overall, this meet was a very good start to the season,” said Schell, who thanked Wilmington Athletic Director Tim Alberts for helping him create the new cross country course at WHS, which proved to be a success.
