SELECTMEN NEWS: Textron To Stop Building Cluster Bombs In Wilmington

WILMINGTON, MA — At Monday’s meeting, the Wilmington Board of Selectmen received a letter from Brian Sinkiewicz, Senior Vice President & General Manager at Textron System Corporation, announcing this his company recently decided to wind down the manufacturing and sale of its Sensor Fuzed Weapon product line.

Sensor Fuzed Weapons are more commonly referred to as “cluster bombs.”

The company’s decision to end the production of these bombs made international news, with the Washington Post reporting on the move early this month.  Textron, according to the Post, was the only U.S. company still building these particular types of bombs.  And these cluster bombs were being built primarily at Textron’s Wilmington location.  The controversial bombs would sometimes bring protestors into town, as the Lowell Sun reported on earlier in the summer.

It’s unclear if any layoffs will occur as a result of the company’s decision.

“As Textron System fulfills final deliveries under existing SFW production contracts, we are in the process of evaluating its impact on our business,” Sinkiewicz told Selectmen. “We greatly appreciate [the town’s] continued support as we transition our business and proceed forward with the development and manufacturing of other advanced capabilities, products, and services.  We have an unwavering commitment to our community and value [its] continued support of our business.”
