WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Rotary Club held its 2nd Annual Community Ice Bucket Challenge on Saturday, August 27, from 10am to noon, at Rotary Park.
This year’s event has raised more than $4,000 to date, with a a 2-year total surpassing $10,000. Every penny has benefited ALS Research through donation to The Angel Fund. Donations are still being accepted via mail at Wilmington Rotary Club; PO Box 503, Wilmington, MA 01887, ATTN: Angel Fund.
Hundreds turned out for this year’s Ice Bucket Challenge. Participants captured by Wilmington Community Television’s cameras included: the Wilmington High School Girls Field Hockey program; Wilmington High School Athletic Director Tim Alberts; students from Lorraine Spada’s School of Dance; Team Lydon; members of the Fourth of July Committee; members of the Wilmington Freemasons; Selectman Greg Bendel, and many Wilmington Rotary Club members, including: Town Manager Jeff Hull, Assistant Town Manager Kendra Amaral, Selectman Mike Champoux, Town Moderator Robert Peterson, School Committee Vice Chair Steve Bjork, Public Buildings Inspector George Hooper, Finance Committee members Jon Eaton (Rotary President) and John Doherty, Recreation Committee member Mike Burns, and Harry Cunningham. The Rotary Club Presidents of Andover and Tewksbury, plus Rotary District Governor Sheryl Meehan, also participated.
Rich Kennedy, President of the Angel Fund, praised the turnout as “absolutely spectacular” and noted that “everyday, every week, every step, we’re getting closer and closer to a cure for ALS.”
“The Ice Bucket Challenge] really brings home the sense of community in Wilmington,” said Rotary Club’s Mike Burns, who thanked participants for another successful event. “And if it’s necessary to do this all again next year, we’ll do it again.”
