SHARON, VT — Frank Walter Johnson Jr, 85, died peacefully early Friday morning, September 2, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born July 30, 1931 in Woburn, MA the son of Frank Walter Sr. and Marion (Wolfe) Johnson. He graduated from Wakefield High School in 1949. He was married to Jean Hird on June 6, 1953 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his honorary discharge he went to work for the New England Telephone Company and then later for the IBEW. They resided in Wilmington, MA until they moved to Sharon, VT in 1972. He and his wife enjoyed spending winters in Ajo, AZ for the last 20+ years and had many friends and fond memories there.
Frank was an active member of the Wakefield Rifle Club where he was Rifle Champion in 1959. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. In Sharon, he served as Chairman of the Planning Commission. He was a founding member of the Sharon TV Association and also served as secretary for the Tri-Town Trail Travelers Snowmobile Club. His hobbies included woodworking and jewelry making and he enjoyed RV traveling, hiking in the desert, gardening, playing the penny slots and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean Hird Johnson of Sharon, VT; three daughters, Valerie Potter of Sharon, VT, Gail White of Oklahoma City, OK and Debra Boles of Sharon, VT. He leaves nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, a sister, Lois Gerber of Bradenton, FL as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Johnson.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 6th from 6 – 8 pm at the Knight Funeral Home, White River Junction, VT. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday September 7th at 2 pm at the Pine Hill Cemetery, Sharon, VT.
