WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Town Common just got a little more welcoming.
A “Welcome To Wilmington” sign was placed at the northerly end of the Town Common, at the intersection of Middlesex Avenue and Church Street, last Thursday.
“Given the Common’s prominence as the focal point of Town activities, establishing a sign in this location will be highly visible and reflect a positive message to all who travel through Town,” says Town Manager Jeff Hull.
The double-sided sign has white engraved lettering on a blue background with the Town seal. The sign board, made of cedar, is 30″ x 60″ x 1.75.” The posts, made of granite, are 12″ x 12″ x 8′.
Public Works Director Mike Woods arranged for the work to be completed using a private sign company out of Tewksbury called the “Gath Sign Company.”
The cost of the sign was approximately $6,400. The expense is being covered by a generous donation from the Wilmington Sons of Italy.
The sign was the brainchild of Wilmington senior Audrey Reed. Reed attended a free lecture at the Wilmington Memorial Library featuring a husband and a wife who documented their visits to all 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. After viewing their slideshow presentation, Reed noted that Wilmington lacked a “welcome”-type sign that many other communities featured.
Reed’s idea was brought to the Town Manager by then Selectman Lou Cimaglia. Cimaglia, and the rest of the Board of Selectmen, unanimously voted to authorize the establishment of the sign at their April 11th meeting.
