WILMINGTON, MA –Wilmington Police and Fire responded to a very serious car crash on Lake Street on Tuesday night.
According to radio broadcast reports via Twitter, a SUV, while traveling at approximately 50 MPH, crashed head-on into a utility pole at the intersection of Lake Street and Jacques Lane around 10:15pm.
A 40-year-old male, not wearing his seatbelt, suffered traumatic injuries, including a large laceration from his forehead to the back of his head.
A MedFlight helicopter, which landed in the field next to the Shawsheen Elementary School, transported the man to a Boston hospital.
A second advanced life support ambulance was requested and arrived on scene, but reports remain unconfirmed if anyone else was in the SUV at the time of the accident.
Police quickly closed Lake Street, between Route 129 and Grove Avenue, so the Massachusetts State Police could investigate the scene and attempt to reconstruct the accident. The road was reopened overnight.
The Tewksbury Fire Department provided mutual aid coverage to the town during and after the crash.
