WILMINGTON, MA — On Monday night, the Wilmington Board of Selectmen honored resident Charlie Boyle, who recently stepped down from the Wilmington Zoning Board of Appeals after 24 years of service to the town.
Boyle was appointed to the Board of Appeals as an Associate Member in 1992, became a full member in 1993, and became Chairman in 1994, a role he’s served in ever since.
“Charlie handled his role with diplomacy and professionalism,” said Town Manager Jeff Hull. “He had the ability to navigate parties of differing opinions, sometimes under contentious circumstances, through the process and reach a conclusion with fairness, while giving everyone involved the opportunity to speak their piece.”
“I want to thank you, on behalf of the town, for your professionalism, and all your volunteerism for many, many years. People like you are what’s great about this town,” Selectman Greg Bendel told Boyle. Selectman Kevin Caira echoed Bendel’s sentiments.
“This is a bittersweet moment for all of us,” said Selectman Mike Champoux. “Your service has been admirable through the years. You rise above all with your professionalism and how you handle issues.”
“I am happy to say I’ve known you for many of your years on the Board and can honestly say that you’re truly a classy guy,” said Selectman Mike McCoy in a written statement. “You’ve also demonstrated professionalism and fairness to your colleagues and the citizens of Wilmington.”
“I’ve been quite impressed with your demeanor and ability to chair your meetings, engage with the public, and to handle yourself with civility and professionalism while seeing all sides of an issue are heard,” said Selectwoman Judy O’Connell. “I’m especially impressed by the respect you’ve garnered among your peers… That’s a big credit to you. The Town of Wilmington has been very well served by you.”
O’Connell then gave Boyle a certificate of appreciation from the town, which read: “In grateful recognition of your outstanding contributions, exceptional performance and dedicated commitment to the highest standards of excellence as a member and chairman of the Wilmington Board of Appeals. Your character and leadership are exemplified by the work and dedication you have unselfishly provided to the town and its citizens over the past 24 years.”
Boyle thanked his current and former Board of Appeals colleagues, Board Secretary Toni LaRivee, and current and former Selectmen for placing their trust in him.
Boyle also recognized the new Board of Appeals Chair, Ed Loud, who was in the audience.
