WILMINGTON, MA – The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce has announced plans to honor beloved Wilmington business owner Carmon Cunningham, who passed away last month at the age of 62.
Cunningham, who owned The Cleaner Spot in the Wilmington Crossing plaza and served as the Chamber of Commerce’s President, will be memorialized through three Chamber initiatives.
#1) The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, the Wilmington School Business Partnership, and We’re One Wilmington will fund an annual scholarship to be given in Carmon’s name to a graduating Wilmington high school student. The scholarship’s criteria is still being ironed out.
#2) The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce will create the “Carmon Cunningham Spirit Award,” which be given annually to a business professional in Wilmington, as voted on by the Chamber’s Board of Directors. The recipient will exemplify Cunningham’s community spirit and meet other defined criteria.
3.) The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce will offer its next Annual Meeting, in the early spring of 2017, in honor of Cunningham’s passing.
The news was announced at Monday’s Board of Selectmen Meeting by Selectman Mike Champoux, who also serves on the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
“Carmon succeeded me as President of the Chamber of Commerce a few years ago. He and I developed a very close friendship and working relationship over the years,” said Champoux. “He touched a lot of folks in town through a myriad of organizations and charitable endeavors that he entrenched himself in immediately after coming to town nine years ago.”
“He was a very impressive and very kind human being who mentored young people, took them into his business, hired them, and helped them grow as individuals,” continued Champoux. “He was [also] always there whenever any business or individual went in asking for help.”
“I just want folks who feel that something ought to be done [to honor Cunningham] to feel comforted that something IS being done,” concluded Champoux, who called the scholarship and business award “the type of recognition that Carmon would feel comfortable with.”
