WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Recreation Department held the 34th Annual Fishing Derby at Silver Lake on Saturday, June 4. This multigenerational event for youth and non-professional adults began in 1983. The Derby allows the Town to showcase its finest natural resource while participants have a chance to learn or improve their fishing skills.
To add some excitement, participants competed with each other for prizes in two categories.
In the Bass category, Frankie Grieco (age 9), reeled in a 14 oz. bass besting Jamie Bagrowski who topped the adult entries in this category with a catch weighing 12 oz.
Winning entries in the non-Bass category were Brooke Johnson (age 9) catching an 11 oz. sunfish and Zhongde Xue (adult) reeling in the largest catch of the day with a catfish tipping the scale at 2 lbs.!
Experienced and novice anglers alike had a great time at this shore-fishing event.
The Recreation Department would like to thank Jim Buckley for his assistance planning and supervising the Derby. Thanks to Pets Plus in Tewksbury for their generous bait donation.
An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the considerable help of volunteers and we offer all our sincere thanks.
