Wilmington Man Dies In July 4th Hit & Run On Maine Vacation

LIMERICK, ME – On Monday, July 4, Chief Deputy Tom Baran and Sergeant Steve Thistlewood, of the York County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a car-pedestrian crash in the vicinity of 140 Washington Street (Route 11) in Limerick for an injured pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.

Upon arrival, Thistlewood and other deputies found John Mullin, 47, of Willington, MA. unconscious with severe injuries. Mullin is vacationing at a lake house on Pickerel Pond. Limerick Fire and Rescue transported Mr. Mullin to Southern Maine Medical Center. Shortly thereafter, Mullin was air lifted to the Maine Medical Center in Portland due to the extent of his injuries.  Mullin would succumb to his injuries later in the evening. The sheriff’s office extends their condolences to the Mullin family for this horrible occurrence.

Witnesses reported that Mullin was walking on the sidewalk in the area of Dollar General and a vehicle went up onto the sidewalk before striking Mullin. After receiving information from witnesses, deputies commenced a search of the area.

While searching for the suspect vehicle, William George, 41, of Limerick arrived on foot to the scene and admitted he struck the pedestrian and left the scene.  George waken into custody.

A third party who claimed that George did not have permission to use the vehicle owns the vehicle that was driven by George.

Thistlewood and other Deputies located the vehicle in back of a Washington St. address, close to the scene of the crash. The vehicle was towed to the sheriff’s office for processing.

The crash is being re-constructed by crash scene specialists from the York and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Offices.

The investigation will continue and charges are anticipated.
