CHESTNUT HILL, MA — Wilmington students Courtney Capistran and Lisamarie DiOrio recently graduated from Boston College.
Commencement was held on May 23 in Alumni Stadium on the Boston College campus in Chestnut Hill, Mass. There were some 4,000 undergraduate and graduate degree recipients in the Boston College Class of 2016.
The 2016 Commencement speaker was U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest J. Moniz, a Boston College alumnus who has blended scientific skills with those of diplomacy and negotiation in tackling issues ranging from the U.S.-Iran nuclear agreement to clean energy. Moniz received an honorary Doctor of Science degree at the ceremony.
Boston College also awarded honorary degrees to four other distinguished individuals: Nannette Canniff, founding president of the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation, which has aided the poor in Haiti for more than 30 years; alumnus Jack Joyce, University benefactor and chairman and founder of the Boston College Club; María Eugenia (Gena) McGowan, principal of St. Matthew Catholic School in Phoenix, Ariz., and alumnus Rev. Emmanuel Mwerekande, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Uganda.
