SELECTMEN NEWS: Recent WHS Grad Recognized For Video Game Volunteerism

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Director of Elderly Services Terri Marciello provided the Board of Selectmen with an update on Senior Center activities at their Monday meeting.  Here are a few highlights:

Kayaking Classes A Huge Hit

Marciello noted that the Senior Center has partnered with LL Bean to hold a 4-week kayaking class at Lake Quannpowitt in Wakefield with certified instructors. Marciello highlighted that Wilmington was the very first Senior Center in the state to offer such classes.  The first class ran last week and was a success — the participants spent 45 minutes in the water and didn’t want to go back to shore when time was up!

Homebound Delivery Meal

The Senior Center has arranged for a meal to be delivered to Wilmington’s homebound seniors this Tuesday, June 28.  The meal will be from Panera Bread and volunteers from Reading Cooperative Bank will drop off the meals, which will include a special Fourth of July-themed treat.

Getting Out Into The Community

Director Terri Marciello and Case Manager Laura Pickett will conducting more community outreach in the coming months.  Both participated in coffee hours at Deming Way this month.  Pickett will be giving a presentation at the Wilmington Memorial Library in September.

WHS Senior Joe Tavanese Receives Senior Center Scholarship

Marciello mentioned that recent WHS graduate Joe Tavanese recently received the Senior Center’s annual scholarship.  Tavanese initatied the Center’s Wii Bowling team after regularly visiting the Center — as an 8th grader — to teach seniors how to use Wii.  Tavanese would bring his own equipment and provide guidance until seniors felt comfortable with the game.

Collecting Air Conditioners & Fans

If any resident has an unneeded air conditioner or fan, the Wilmington Senior Center accepts donations and will give them out to seniors within the community who are in need.  Marciello also noted that, despite the current weather, it’s not too soon to start thinking about Fuel Assistance for the winter. Any Wilmington resident 60 years or older who is in need of fuel assistance should contact the Elderly Services Department at 978-658-7595.

Selectmen React

“Kudos to Joe,” said Selectman Mike Champoux, in reference to Marciello’s scholarship announcement.  “That’s remarkable. That story touched me.”

“You do a terrific job,” added Selectman Mike McCoy.  “And the Center does an outstanding job overall.”

“Thank you to you and your staff for the services you provide to the seniors of Wilmington,” said Selectman Kevin Caira.

“I’m impressed by the creative ways you and your staff continue to serve our seniors, including some of our veterans,” noted Selectman Greg Bendel
