WILMINGTON, MA – For the second consecutive year, the Wilmington School Committee has given Superintendent Mary DeLai an overall summative performance rating of “proficient” in her annual evaluation.
DeLai also received a “proficient” ranking in each of the four individual evaluation standards required by the state – (1) Instructional Leadership, (2) Management & Operations, (3) Family & Community Engagement, and (4) Professional Culture.
A “proficient” rating is the second highest rating available, above “unsatisfactory” and “needs improvement,” and below “exemplary.”
The rating was announced at Wednesday’s School Committee Meeting by School Committee Chair Julie Broussard.
Leading up to the meeting, each Wilmington School Committee member, besides new member Tom Tolbert, individually evaluated DeLai. A subcommittee of the school committee then met to compile the evaluations into a summative document.
Broussard read a portion of the document into the record on Wednesday night.
“While the findings of our evaluation result in a rating of Proficient, we want to stress that we continue to be extremely impressed with Superintendent DeLai’s job performance, especially in light of the fact she spent a significant amount of time without a full complement of her leadership team,” read Broussard.
Broussard praised DeLai’s commitment to fiscal responsibility; her development of leadership and advisory teams; and her efforts made in closing the achievement gap.
“Although there is still much work to be done in this area, what she has achieved thus far is very commendable,” said Broussard. “We look forward to seeing the results of her hard work soon.”
DeLai was also complimented for her professional development undertakings, including participation in the Superintendent Induction Program and various educational and leadership conferences and workshops.
“There is no question that Mary works tirelessly on behalf of the children of Wilmington. Thank you, Mary,” concluded Broussard.
No other School Committee member offered comments.
The School Committee then unanimously voted to approve the “proficient” rating, on a motion from Vice Chair Steve Bjork and a second from Peggy Kane.
“Thank you very much,” responded Superintendent DeLai. “I truly appreciate the feedback… It’s been both an extraordinary and challenging year…”
The School Committee met in Executive Session both before and after Wednesday’s public meeting, presumably to discuss a potential raise for the Superintendent, which will likely be announced at the June 22 meeting.
