WILDCAT WAKEUP: WHS Baseball Qualifies For State Tourney, Advances To Scanlon Finals With Win Over AP

WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Boys Varsity Baseball Team (10-9) defeated Austin Prep (15-4) by a score of 5 to 3 in the semi-finals of the Dick Scanlon Memorial Tournament at Wilmington High yesterday.  With the victory, the Wildcats have qualified for the state tournament.

Wilmington fell behind early, with Austin Prep scoring one run in each of the first three innings. The Wildcat offense got rolling in the 4th inning with a 2-run double off the bat of Justin Leger, scoring Danny Gracia and Connor Zaya.  Wilmington scored three more runs in the 5th inning.  Brian Cavanaugh led off the inning with a double and scored on a 2-out single from Gracia. An error and wild pitching — walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch — contributed to Wilmington’s final two runs, scored by Gracia and Justin Kannally.

Wildcat ace Jackson Gillis earned the win, working in and out of trouble over the first three innings and settling down in his final three innings.  He gave up 3 earned runs on just 3 hits.  Gillis struggled early with his command, walking 8 batters, but still managed to strike out 7 Austin Prep Cougars in 6 innings of work.  Closer Graham Smith picked up the save with a scoreless inning of relief.

NEXT UP: The WHS Boys Varsity Baseball Team (10-9) faces Chelmsford in the finals of the Dick Scanlon Tournament, sponsored by Nor’easter Baseball, TODAY (Sunday, May 29) at 3pm at WHS.  Winchester and Austin Prep face off in the consultation game at noon.
