WILMINGTON, MA — Below are Wilmington Youth Soccer travel game summaries from Saturday, May 21, 2016.
Wilmington Boys U9-1 at Burlington U10-1
The Wildcats travelled to Burlington this week and came home with a 3-1 victory. The boys played aggressively from the opening kickoff and fought hard until the final whistle. Early in the first half, Casey Lanagan and Zack Guyette controlled the ball in the deep right corner of the Burlington defense. As Casey broke toward the net, a Burlington defender attempted to clear the ball. However, his clearance went directly to Lukas Poirier in front of the net who blasted the ball home for a 1-0 lead.
Later in the first half, Tommy Lewis and Jackson McDonald worked the ball into the same corner and combined on several passes to free themselves of the defenders. Tommy’s cross found Jack Bourque who had pushed forward from his defensive position to slot home a shot off the post into the back of the net.
After keeping Burlington off the scoreboard in the first half, the defense continued to disrupt the Burlington attack in the second half. Oliver Ferrer intercepted several passes and made rushes up the right side that pressured the defense and created many opportunities for the Wildcats including his own volley attempt that somehow avoided the back of the net.
Cullen Walsh used his speed and strength to continually repel the Burlington attack. He dominated the left side and didn’t allow anyone to pass by him. His speed led to quick transitions into the offensive end for Wilmington. Anthony Heigham was often the final defender and each time stood firm against the Burlington forwards. He repeatedly blocked shots or poked the ball away to frustrate the Red Devils.
With about 10 minutes left, Jack Bourque passed the ball out of the defensive end to Lukas Poirier who was able to beat the keeper and secure his first brace of the season and put the Wildcats up 3-0. Moments later, Casey made a perfect pass to Jackson at the top of the 18 yard box. Jackson’s hard low shot went just wide of the left post.
As they have all season, the goalie tandem of Brennan Walsh and Mick Keogan kept Wilmington in the game. Mick started and aggressively picked off the long-range passes and punts of Burlington. Each time sacrificing his body to dive in front of a charging forward to scoop up the ball before they could get a shot off. Brennan made the saves of the game in a quick sequence in the second half when he jumped to punch a Burlington shot into the post and then dove in front of a hard shot and made a desperation save with the side of his head. The fans cheered as Brennan not only made the save, but as he jumped up after showing he wasn’t injured.
Wilmington held Burlington to a single late goal on a rocket of a shot from outside the 18.
Wilmington Boys U9-2 at Burlington
Wilmington BU9-2 team traveled to Burlington on Saturday in what turned out to be a tough fight. Wilmington players Danny O’Mahony and Cameron Jenks stayed on their toes creating many scoring opportunities while battling a tough Burlington defense. Toward the end of the first half, Wilmington got on the board with goals from Lincoln Levesque and Koko Shinohara which added that bit of excitement to the game. The second half continued the excitement as the offense led by Brendan Fitzgerald and Layne Coutu combined to pressure Burlington, just to come up short. Kaleb Molina and Jack Murphy held a strong defensive back, while solid goalkeeping by Tyler Florencio and Ayden Balter kept the Burlington team working hard. Tyler Marinho and Ryan Muise assisted on the field for a solid combined team effort. The end result was not in Wilmington’s favor, but the hard work and determination from this young team was appreciated by the cheering supporting crowd.
