WILMINGTON, MA — Below are Wilmington Youth Soccer in-town game summaries from Saturday, May 21, 2016.
Girls Kinders:
Orlando Pride vs. Seattle Reign
On a beautiful Saturday morning, the crowds gathered at the Shawsheen fields for this back and forth game. The Orlando Pride led by Kaia Donn got the crowd jumping out of their seats. Gianna Oconnell and Caroline Broussard led the scoring charge while the great defensive effort of Sarah Najarian and Taylor Najarian kept the action going.
Boys Grade 1:
NY Red Bulls vs. Chicago Fire
In what could have been confused as a World Cup Match, the New York Red Bulls started off strong with great offensive pressure from Chase O’Brien and Rafael Hernandez Osorno. Coupled with the steel-like defense of Preston Hunt, their efforts made for an incredible game. Zachary Atwater scored first for the New York Red Bulls, while the Hope Solo like effort of Jackson Griffith provided solid goal-keeping to keep their team alive.
NE Revolution vs. Houston Dynamo
The New England Revolution took on the Houston Dynamo in what turned out to be the most exciting game of the season. The dynamic duo of Fernando Gunera and Nathan Anderson combined to put the Revs on the score board only to see the Dynamo come back. The back and forth exchange kept the hard working team of Cameron Molina, Ethan Lydon, James Savoie and Kyle price on their heels as they battle each counter attack. The game came down to the last few shots on net, as the Revolution could not hold to the lead, but the inspiration led to more cheers from the crowd.
Columbus Crew vs. Seattle Sounders
The crowd was kept on the edge of their seats this week as the Crew, led by the offensive skills of Thomas Murphy and Dillan Roberts resulted in goals by Jack Cronin, Jonathan Malley and Dillan Roberts. The defense was not to be left out of this one either as Jack Cronin and Jonathan Malley kept the ball out of their zone for much of the game.
Top-notch play kept people watching this one. Excellent offensive plays by Cole Falk and Riley Caples led to multiple goals by Cael Considine. Richard Holland applied heavy pressure causing Columbus to back pedal. Defensive positioning by Collin Holman and Nolan White fended off any threat that came thru making it tough for Columbus.
Girls Grade 1:
FC Kansas City vs. Chicago Red Stars
With a short bench due to dance recital rehearsals, it was all hands on deck for FC Kansas City on Saturday. A special thanks to Bailey O’Connor of the Chicago Red Stars for volunteering to play with FC Kansas City. As for the game, the air was full of excitement, as the much-anticipated match between FC Kansas City and the Chicago Red Stars commenced. Fantastic ball skills were displayed by Bella St. Onge and Bailey O’Connor, resulting in goals by Shannon Hounsell. The midfield and defensive play of Danielle Chillemi, and Hailey Reguera kept FC Kansas City in excellent shape on this beautiful day at the Shawsheen fields.
Western NY flash vs. Seattle Reign
Fans were pulling for both teams throughout this match between the Flash and the Reign. Near miss scoring opportunities by Gabby Carriglio, Emma Tarin and Ruby Poulo had both sidelines gasping for breathe. Strong mid field play by Amy Keohane, Katelyn Perkins and Kalea Lamb, kept the Reign out of the Flash’s defensive third. Strong backline play by Angelina and Celina Vo cleared many a scoring chance out of the Flash’s goalmouth.
Girls Grade 2:
Washington Spirit vs. FC Kansas City
Top-Notch play kept people watching this one. Excellent offensive plays by Maria McCarthy, Alison McElligott, Kaitlyn Shackelford, and Cayley Israelson applied heavy pressure causing the Washington Spirit to back pedal. Defensive positioning by Ava Cirone, Katherine Hughes, Mackenzie Scanlon, and Maria McCarthy fended off any threat that came thru making it tough for the Washington Spirit. Katherine Hughes, Alison McElligott, Mackenzie Scanlon, and Kaitlyn Shackelford also played a great game in net, keeping the game in hand. A special thanks to Samantha Bolanos for switching teams to allow a game to be played due to the Washington Spirit being short handed. It goes to show the great group of girls that we have here in Wilmington Youth Soccer.
Western NY Flash vs. Boston Breakers
The Boston Breakers were also impressive on the offensive side of the ball with great skill being displayed by Lilly Abbott, Lindsay Broussard and Skylar Nguyen leading to goals by Casey Kelley. The defense was also showing their skills today with Emma Chirichiello and Macy Savage keeping the ball out of their zone for much of the game, while the goal keeping team of Isabella Zaya and Nicole Gallucci kept this game close.
