WILMINGTON, MA — Below are Wilmington Youth Soccer travel game summaries from Saturday, May 14, 2016.
Wilmington BU9-2 vs. Malden
The Wilmington Wildcats Boys U9-2 team took on Malden in what turned out to be an exciting match. From the opening whistle, the Wildcats offensive burst started right and opened the scoring. Lincoln Levesque put 2 in the back of the net and set the tone for what would be a thrilling win for the Wildcats. The Malden counter attacks were stopped short by the iron-clad defensive plays of Danny O’Mahony, Layne Coutu and Tyler Florencio. Around the half-way mark, the Wildcats got on the board again with quick successive goals from Jack Murphy and Kaleb Molina. The first half came to an end as Koko Shinohara closed out the scoring.
Tending the net, Ayden Balter and Brendan Fitzgerald were among several Wildcats who helped hold Malden from getting in the game. Cameron Jenks and Tyler Marinho kept control of the game at the middle of the field and helped feed the streaking offensive attack led by Ryan Muise along with Brendan Fitzgerald and Tyler Florencio who finished off with goals for a strong showing from the Wildcat team. The second half ended with great displays of teamwork, passing combinations and continued pressure on the Malden defense.
Wilmington GU9-1 vs. Wakefield
The Wilmington GU9-1 team hosted the Wakefield WakeSA-3C team at home on the Shawsheen fields this beautiful Saturday afternoon May 14, 2016. Wakefield was a tough competitor and, both teams came ready to play. The Defensive line of Addyson Hunt and Arianna Cook put the pressure on the offense working together to move the ball into Wilmington’s offensive zone. Callie McCauley, started in goal and made some key saves which kept the momentum of the game going in Wilmington’s favor. Jillian Collins scored Wilmington’s first goal of the game after some great passes from her teammates Emma Alworth, and Allesandra Delgenio. Grace Berrier played strong defense kicking the ball up the sidelines to her teammates. The Wilmington offense did a great job pressuring the defense Eva Boudreau had a perfect pass to Alyssa Costantiello who had a nice shot on goal. Skylar Driscoll was quick to the ball passing to her teammates in order to push the ball up the field. Wilmington brought the ball up the sidelines and was met with some strong defense on the opposing team, Jillian Collins did a great job of supporting her teammates, recovering the ball and charging to the net for her second goal of the game making the score 2-0 Wilmington!
It was a great first half, both teams played strong. The second half started with Emma Alworth in goal who made some great saves defending the net. Grace Berrier made a beautiful pass to Addyson Hunt, who took a great shot on net. After, some nice communication and excellent passes by Alyssa Costantiello, and Callie McCauley, Skylar Driscoll was able to make a strong shot on goal. A nice save by Wakefield’s goalie followed by a punt to the fifty yard line. Wilmington’s Jillian Collins quickly recovered the ball at the fifty and drove down the field scoring her third goal of the game and bringing the score to 3-0 Wilmington! Eva Boudreaux and Allesandra Delgenio once again pushed the ball up the field on defense creating more opportunities for Wilmington’s offense. Grace Berrier had a perfect pass to Arianna Cook who had a great shot, scoring Wilmington’s fourth goal and bringing the final score 4-0 Wilmington! It was a great game to watch both teams played strong.
Wilmington BU9-1 vs. Charlestown
The Wilmington boys U9-1 team travelled to Charlestown Saturday and tied a talented Charlestown team 2-2. Tommy Lewis opened the scoring with a tremendous individual effort beating two players down the right side before besting the Charlestown keeper.
Jack Bourque pestered the Charlestown defense all game with his speed and quick moves leading to many shots. Jack, Tommy and Mick Keogan combined to push for a second goal, but the Charlestown defense stood up to the challenge.
Just before the halftime whistle, Brennan Walsh celebrated his birthday by making a terrific diving save to deny Charlestown on a close range shot. Brennan then passed to Lukas Poirier who charged down the left side and crossed the ball to a wide open Anthony Heigham who scored with an opposite foot strike.
Casey Lanagan and Jackson McDonald anchored the Wilmington defense as they seemingly built a stone wall in front of the Wilmington goal. They repeatedly stole the ball from the Charlestown offense and fed the ball forward to Oliver Ferrer and Zack Guyette who each came close to scoring the game winner for the Wildcats in the closing minutes of the game.
Once again, Mick played very well in net and combined with Brennan and Casey to continually turn away Charlestown’s chances.
