WILDCAT WAKEUP: WHS Baseball Wins Behind 11 Hits, Gracia’s Complete Game

WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Baseball Team (9-6) defeated Watertown, 6 to 3, on Monday night, under the lights at Watertown High.

Sophomore starter Danny Gracia remained unbeaten, picking up his 3rd win of the season. Gracia pitched a complete game 5-hitter, surrendering just 3 runs,  while striking out 5 and walking 2.

After following behind 2-0, the Wildcats scored their first run in the 3rd inning. Justin Leger and Graham Smith both walked, then pulled off a double steal to move to 2nd and 3rd. Leger would later score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brian Cavanaugh.

TThe Wildcats took the lead in the 4th inning, plating 2 runs to make the score, 3-2. Chris Grecco and Joe Kelley would reach base on back-to-back infield single. Both players advanced after a throwing error by Watertown’s catcher.  Grecco and Kelley would then score on a 2-out single to center by Justin Leger.

The Wildcats padded their lead in the 7th inning, scoring 3 additional runs.  Matt Spurr and Brian Cavanaugh reached out singles, then Jackson Gillis produced a single of his own, scoring Spurr.  Cavanaugh and Gillis went on to score on a 2-out single from Joe Kelley.

Gracia gave up his third run in the 7th inning, but managed to work his way out of a jam to slam the door shut on Watertown.

In the end, 7 Wildcats recorded 11 total hits, including Brian Cavanaugh (3 hits, 1 RBI); Jackson Gillis (2 hits, 1 RBI); Joe Kelley (2 hits, 2 RBI); Justin Leger (1 hit, 2 RBI); Danny Gracia (1 hit); Chris Grecco (1 hit); and Matt Spurr (1 hit).

NEXT UP: The WHS Baseball Team (9-6) takes on Stoneham on Wednesday at 3:45pm at Stoneham High.  If the Wildcats win, they will qualify for the State Tournament.
