Job Description
SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Schools, the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Staff Development will act as the chief curriculum, instruction, assessment and staff development administrator for the school district. As such, the Assistant Superintendent shall provide leadership in the areas of curriculum, assessment and instruction, staff development, research, educational programs and materials for the Wilmington Public Schools.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees, monitors, and evaluates the curriculum, instruction and assessment programs of the school system.
- Keeps abreast of developments in curriculum and instruction and furnishes leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the district educational programs.
- Studies and evaluates, and, as appropriate, recommends adoption of new instructional materials, methods, and programs, and assists in budget preparation for newly approved instructional programs as related to instructional supplies, equipment and materials.
- Provides leadership for system-wide curriculum review, curriculum revision/development, and the development of instructional programs at all levels and schools.
- Works with principals, department heads and teacher committees in organizing and coordinating grade level and departmental meetings, in order to affect horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program throughout the district.
- Provides staff leadership to ensure understanding of and promote the educational objectives of the district and assists in planning programs of in-service educational activities for instructional personnel.
- Oversees the administration of state and district mandated testing programs and prepares reports for the Superintendent of Schools regarding student test performance and recommendations for improvement.
- Oversees the articulation of the entire K-12 instructional program and secondary course scheduling coordination, providing regular direction, supervision and evaluation to the curriculum program.
- Prepares drafts of needed Committee policies and administrative rules for the Superintendent’s review and action.
- Interprets the programs, philosophy and policies to the district staff, students and the community at large.
- Attends School Committee meetings and prepares such reports for the Committee as the Superintendent may request.
- Conducts research, prepares reports and serves in an advisory capacity on problems concerning the instructional matters referred to by the Superintendent.
- Works with the building principals in the improvement of individual staff competencies.
- Works with the Director of Student Support Services to ensure equity in the instructional program for students with special needs.
- Provides effective and pro-active leadership for system-wide professional development programs.
- Serves as the chairperson for the district-wide Professional Development Committee.
- Conducts and coordinates in-service workshops in conjunction with the system-wide staff development program.
- Coordinates the development of the annual Professional Development Plan and calendar.
- Prepares, drafts and presents a comprehensive budget for curriculum renewal, textbook adoption, staff training, and opportunities for in-service and professional development points for recertification for consideration by the Superintendent and School Committee.
- Oversees the preparation and implementation of educational grants/proposals for the acquisition of federal and state grant funds.
- Works cooperatively with the Superintendent regarding budget recommendations to the School Committee.
- Coordinates the implementation of the Educator Evaluation System and assists with supervision and evaluation of instructional staff.
- Oversees the District-wide Teacher Mentor and Induction Program.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Superintendent may assign.
- Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages administrative employees and support staff that are directly involved with curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Caries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Job Requirements
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or University with specialization in Education or a related field.
- At least five (5) years of experience in education, part of which must have been in a supervisor capacity.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Valid Teaching Certificate and Valid Administrator Certificate with Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent endorsement and SEI Endorsement.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience preferred
- Master degree preferred
- Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required
