WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Baseball Team (7-3) earned its fifth consecutive victory on Friday afternoon, beating Winchester (1-8) at Scanlon Field, 3 to 2.
Wilmington starter Matt Woods picked up the win with a complete game. Woods struck out 5, walked one and scattered 8 hits – and 2 earned runs – over 7 innings.
Wilmington fell behind early, but answered quickly when Graham Smith led off with a triple to center field. Brian Cavanaugh scored Smith with a single. Cavanaugh would later score himself after a single from Jackson Gillis and an RBI fielder’s choice from Chris Grecco.
Graham Smith would score the walk-off game winning run in the seventh, after reaching on a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch, and scoring courtesy of a Matt Spurr single up the middle. Smith was called safe at the plate on a close play.
Smith, in just his second start after missing 7 games with a pulled hamstring, led the offense, going 3-for-4 with 2 runs. Danny Gracia added 2 hits of his own, including a double, to contribute to Wilmington’s 8-hit attack.
NEXT UP: The WHS Baseball Team (7-3) takes on Burlington on Saturday, May 7 at 3:45pm at Francis Wyman School in Burlington in a game that was rained out earlier in the week.
