WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington School Committee is considering making changes to several district policies involving nondiscrimination, student travel, field trips and financial reporting.
Gender Identity
The committee is looking to add “gender identity” as a protected class under its Nondiscrimination Policy (Policy AC) and a related policy, Student Policies Goals (Policy JA-E).
Students will not be discriminated against based on their gender identity, as well as their sex, race, color, religion, disability, sexual orientation or national origin.
Student Travel & Field Trips
The School Committee is looking to add a new section to its Student Travel Policy (Policy JJH).
It reads: “Advertising for privately run trips shall not be permitted on school property. Wilmington Public School employees who may be participating in privately run trips sponsored by school affiliated groups should submit the proper conflict of interest disclosure forms if a financial benefit is being provided to them that would otherwise not be provided to a non-school employee.”
The School Committee is also looking to add a new section to its Field Trips Policy (Policy IJOA).
It reads: “Only parents or guardians of students who are participating in the field trip or current employees of Wilmington Public Schools shall be permitted to serve as chaperones for any school-sponsored field trip. Exceptions to this may be made by the Superintendent with prior written approval. Exceptions shall only be made if a sufficient number of chaperones who meet the above criteria are not available to allow for proper levels of supervision. All chaperones must be CORI-checked.”
Financial Accounting & Reporting
The School Committee is looking to bring its Financial Accounting & Reporting Policy (Policy DI) in line with its current practice.
The policy currently calls for the Superintendent to submit mostly financial statements to the School Committee. The revised policy calls for quarterly financial statements, which has been the practice of the Committee for several years.
The new policy will also add a section spelling out the fact that the Superintendent receives a monthly detailed financial report from the Director of Administration and Finance.
All of the above policies have the backing of the Committee’s Policy Subcommittee and will be voted on by the full Committee at its next meeting on Wednesday, May 11 at 7pm.
